Generic drug initiative encourages West Virginians to use generic prescription drugs
Generic drug initiative encourages West Virginians to use generic prescription drugs Original article Chances are when you pick up your prescription drugs you don’t even notice if they are name brand medications or generics. But a new initiative in West Virginia means you’re probably getting generics. A state wide campaign, “Generics Are Powerful” was launched Tuesday.
Buy quality generic drugs from Indian Pharmacy, save big
Fast shipping. Accept VISA MASTER, AMEX, E-CHECK, JCB.
It’s part of a national campaign encouraging patients to use generics drugs. Christa Ball uses generic prescriptions, “Generic has the same as name brand. And if it’s cheaper, and with the economy the way that it is, I’m going to go for the generic”.
Going for generic is actually a West Virginia state law. Pharmacists Roger Hickman explains, “Yes, in the state of West Virginia, there is a law that says that the pharmacy will give the patient a generic equivalent if it’s available. And the doctor’s prescription that comes to us, most all the time, has that written on the bottom of the prescription where a generic is dispensed.” However, not all prescriptions are available in a generic form. But according to the pharmacists, there is very little difference in generic versus name brand.
“The generics are the same thing, made by a different manufacturer.” says Hickman.
That different manufacturer creates competition, driving down prescription costs.
“My son’s on medicade so we have to have generic. But I pay for mine. But if they gave me a name brand, I would definitely tell them I’d like to have the generic because, it’s cheaper.” adds Ball.
Insurance companies are also part of the reason for the switch to generic medications. Most insurance companies will not cover the brand name medications.
